Movie Night

After a 5 year COVID hiatus, we are pleased to announce the return of our popular monthly Friday Movie Nights. Once again co-hosted by Chris Day and John Eustice at the St. Viator Province Center in Arlington Heights, this is an opportunity for casual fellowship around a thought provoking movie, with a relaxed discussion of the film afterwards.

This is a low pressure way to either stay connected with your brothers from Illuman Illinois, or to introduce other men to us in a drop-in, no commitment environment. Our goal is to offer showings on or as close to the 1 st Friday of each month, subject to the calendar of our generous Viatorian hosts.

Scapegoating w/ Bob & Jack)

Throughout history and today Scapegoating has been a great social and personal evil. Rather than deal with our own weaknesses and negativity we find it easier to transfer our guilt onto some other group, person or things by singling that other out unmerited negative treatment.

We seem to need another person or group to be against to form our identity or group. Jack Moller and Bob Colaresi will lead us on a Saturday morning reflection on this prevalent Scapegoating that is a curse today socially and personally,

to look at ways to break this vicious cycle.

It will be December 6th , 2025 – 8:30 to Noon, Carmelite Spiritual Center in Darien.

The Ocean of God's Love: A Men's Writing Retreat Inspired by Rumi

At this year's in-person writing retreat, we will open our hearts to one of the most beloved poets of all time. Rumi may have lived an ocean away, yet his metaphors and vivid images of life, love, and God are as stirring today as they were when he wrote them 800 years ago. We will seek to let this poetic mystic illuminate our lives as we follow his universal call and share the specifics of our own stories. Capturing our thoughts through poetry and journaling, we shall connect with other men throughout this engaging weekend retreat. Sponsored by Illuman of Illinois Open to all men!

In the Mouth of the Dragon: Cancer, Concussion, Conclusion: An Immersion into the Wilderness of Challenging Times

The idea of the Dragon is truly archetypal in nature; providing an image that draws us into the deep struggles we each must face at some point in our lives. This mini retreat will take us into a personal story of one’s journey into the mouth of the dragon.

What is it like when in one day…one week…the rug is pulled out from beneath one’s feet?

When one’s health diminishes, why does it seem like there is a “piling on” happening?

What happens when you find yourself in uncharted territory, like Dante laments? In the middle of the road of my life / I find myself in a dark wood, /where the true way was lost.

Led by Leo Kamin and Bill McElroy

“Our Wild God” Exploring the Masculine Spiritual Journey

Three days of discovery exploring the parts of us that we have not paid attention to, using the four major masculine archetypes: King, Lover, Warrior, and Magician, and including the Loyal Soldier.  We are complicated and often confusing beings and sometimes we get disconnected from our inherent masculinity. There will be presentations, quiet time, meaningful sharing in council, and drumming, to help awaken us. Sponsored by Illuman of Illinois and St. Thomas Men. Open to all men!

Joseph - Our Mentor as Men

Joseph - Our Mentor as Men

Joseph, a man who listens to dreams, whom God appointed to become the father who taught Jesus how to be a man of faith, trust and justice. A man who experienced a sense of betrayal by his intended, a man of few words, who was so significant in Jesus’ life, from whom he learned the experience of “Abba” – a man written out of the story to protect the virginity of Mary. As a successful carpenter or stone mason, Joseph is a good mentor for us in our journey to become authentic men of faith, hope and generative love –as husbands, fathers, grandfathers, elders and in our work environment. Through reflecting on the biblical stories, Jack and Bob will lead us to be inspired by this wonderful man who mentors and models our male experience. Come join your brothers on this advent experience. Led by Bob Colaresi and Jack Moller

Awaken 2024

  • Lake Williamson Christian Center (map)

Lineage is not linear. Enter into sacred space with your ancestors and descendants, as the past, present, and future weave together into one tapestry. Awaken 2024, Illuman's annual men's gathering, calls you come and add your story to the pattern. We will gather on the weekend of All Saints, All Souls, and Dia de los Muertos to reconnect with our stories of origin - honoring the wisdom of those who have gone before - so together we can foster a better story for our collective future.

Not just a typical "conference," Awaken incorporates the touchstones that make Illuman's work unique: deep inner work featuring ritual, teaching, nature wanderings, poetry, drumming, song, small group councils, and open time to just rest, recreate, and connect.
